Synopsis:

Zeus gave her one simple job: Kill every human. Atropos—daughter of Zeus and the third goddess of Fate from Greek mythology —spends her eternal life snipping human lifelines when their mortal lives are over. As if being a killer doesn’t make life miserable enough, she and her Fate-wielding sisters must live amongst the humans on Earth thanks to a long-running feud between their mother and Zeus. Living on Earth means they must mingle with the mortals, attend the local high school, and attempt to fit in—or at least not stand out too much.

Killing and mingling don’t mix, which is why Atropos’ number-one rule is to avoid all relationships with the humans. Caring for the people she has to kill is a fast track to insanity. However, when Alex Morgan walks into her first-period English class, she knows she’s in for trouble. He’s the worst kind of human for her to like—one with a rapidly approaching expiration date. And he makes Atropos want to break all the rules.

Excerpt:

I turn off my desk lamp and computer, starting to get up, but then sit back down. My curiosity about Alex has been building all day. I’ve tried to tamp it down, to forget him, but I can’t. Even Chloe’s chatter couldn’t take him out of my thoughts. I boot the computer back up and give in to temptation.

I search for Alex’s record in our database. What I’m doing isn’t forbidden, but I rarely bother to check on the humans once I assign their manner of death. I forget them until I see them again on their date of death. However, tonight, I want to see what kind of fate Lacey devised for him and refresh my memory about how and when he’ll die.

I find his file but just as I’m about to double click and open it, I pull back. Do I really want to know what Lacey has planned for him? He’s already faced grief and loss. What if his fate gets worse than that? Do I want that knowledge?

I think for a few moments and decide it doesn’t really matter either way. He and I aren’t going to become friends. I enjoyed our afternoon together, but that has to be the end of it. If his fate is bad, I can live with it. He is, after all, just another human. Easy come, easy go.

I double click on the file. His entire past and future lies before me. I scroll down to the end of the document, looking for the relevant part, the date of death. I don’t have to scroll far.

May fifteenth of this year.

I read the page again. The date doesn’t change. May fifteenth is a little less than two months from now. I quickly scroll back up, looking for the details on how he will die. I’m furious when I find them.

About the Author:Jennifer

Jennifer is a freelance writer and novelist. As a freelancer, she writes everything from technical manuals to articles on personal finance and European-style board games. Her interest in storytelling began when she was six and her parents gave her a typewriter for Christmas and agreed to pay her $.01 per page for any stories she churned out. Such a loose payment system naturally led to a lot of story padding. Broken Fate, her first novel, earned her $2.80 from her parents.

Jennifer lives in North Carolina and, when not writing, can often be found reading, trawling the shelves at the library, playing board games, watching sports, camping, running marathons, and playing with her dog.

Author Interview: L.M. Augustine

debutauthorsbash-banner

Welcome to one of today’s stops for the 2013 Debut Authors Bash, hosted by YAReads!

I am SUPER excited introduce all of you to L.M. Augustine! L.M. Augustine debuted in May with his stand alone, young adult novel Click to Subscribe, while his second book, Two Roads, a new adult novel, was just released August 26th.

Hey, L.M. Augustine! Welcome to Between Printed Pages, we’re so happy to have you here today~

Thank you so much for having me!

Before we start, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m L.M. Augustine. I’m an Author 007, a professional dork, a twitter addict, a dessert lover, among other things. I’m a bit obsessed with writing and reading as well. 🙂

17285743As a debut author, you must to extremely excited (and nervous) about getting your work out there. What/Who inspired you to start writing and what sparked the idea for Click to Subscribe?

I’m not exactly sure what inspired me to start writing. I always loved to read and consider myself to be a creative person, so I guess it sparked from there.

Click was actually inspired by… you guessed it… a YouTube video. I was watching one of John Green’s vlogs and he mentioned that two of his fans (one boy and one girl) met online and hit it off so much that they were organizing a real life meet up. At the time, I thought that was so cool. I mean, falling in love through YouTube videos? I didn’t even realized that happened.

Over time, the idea started to develop, and I kept thinking how plausible that could be. I wondered what those two people would have to be like to fall in love over the Internet, wondered what happened to them, wondered what will happen to them. I’m not sure how the rest came about, but the next thing I knew it was midnight and I was scribbling away the first chapter of what would eventually become Click To Subscribe.

What was the publishing process like for you? What advice do you have for aspiring writers and others trying to get their work published?

Two Roads FINAL COVER

I’d been querying agents with previous projects of mine for about a year and a half before I published Click To Subscribe, and I learned a lot about writing and publishing through it. Then one day I sat down and wrote Click To Subscribe and it sort of flowed out of me, and I decided I wanted to self-publish (I never queried this one) because I felt like for this book, it needed to be published my way. Self-publishing has been amazing so far. It’s a lot of work but so rewarding, and the awesome bloggers (like yourself!) and readers have been a great support. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

I love self-publishing and I think much of the stigma against it is gone–plus money-wise, it’s the best option–but I also don’t think new writers should rush out and do it. I actually encourage you to get involved in the writing community, get on forums, and query agents when you write your first book, because that whole experience, whether it results in anything or not, teaches you so much about writing and publishing and developing thick skin that it’s almost needed if you want to make it in the industry. Then, once you feel like you know the ins and outs of publishing and that your writing is strong enough, I think it’s important to consider your options. There are so many ways to publish–small presses, Big Five publishers, self-publishing–that you have to remember what’s right for you. Do the research and know your goals and what you can and can’t achieve on your own. I don’t think any of these publishing methods is better than the other on their own, without your needs factored in. The playing field has been leveled and unless you’re a lead title with a Big Five, you have an even chance at success in all of these different publishing methods.

All that to say: take your time and develop your craft, then do what’s write for you.

As an aspiring writer, I often find myself with too many ideas and get sidetracked by them when I’m in the middle of a WIP. How do you stay on track with your WIPs when new ideas come knocking at your door?

Sometimes I don’t! I feel that way all the time too, but one thing that really helps is to write down the shiny new idea you’re having, maybe write the first page, and get it out of your head. Then finish your current project and go back to it later.

What’s next for you? Any new projects on the table?

I’m working on something now, actually. I’ve just started it and it’s NA, but I’m really excited about it. That’s all I can say for now. 🙂

For all the readers out there, could you name a few books for us that you’ve read and absolutely loved?

The Sea of Tranquility, The Fault In Our Stars, Before I Fall, and Slammed are some of my favorites!

Apart from writing, reading, and being awesome, what do you do in your free time? Any unusual hobbies?

Besides spending my nights as a masked superhero saving the world from crime? I have a goal to eat as many different types of fruit out there as possible. (Don’t laugh! LOL)

Who are your top 3 favourite authors (dead or alive) and why?

I’m a huge fan of John Green, Colleen Hoover, and just recently, Lauren Oliver. 🙂 I love all of their characters and their voices. Plot isn’t as big of a deal to me; characterization, fun dialogue, and character development as the story progresses are the most important in my mind, and these authors have mastered it.

What about your top 3 musicians/bands/groups and why?

I’m a huge fan of Phillip Phillips, Maroon 5 (I know, I know), and Robin Thicke.

Last, but not least, what is your favourite word?

I love the word “inevitable.” I have no idea why.

Thank you so much, L.M. Augustine, for taking the time to answer our questions! Congratulations on your debut release, and we hope to see more for you soon!

Ashley

“Good afternoon and welcome to the Field House Grille. May I start you two off with drinks or an appetizer today?” The waiter’s voice startles me out of my conspiracy theories, and I resume perusing my menu.

“Yes, I’ll have a long island ice tea and a white wine spritzer for the lady.” Gregory orders with confidence. He’s only a year shy of the legal drinking age so he may pass as old enough to get served, but it’s obvious I’m not old enough to drink yet. “And then we’ll have an order of the calamari to start and for our entrees she’ll have the sea bass, and I’ll have the filet.” He shuts his menu and hands it back to the waiter with bravado.

“I’ll actually have a bottle of San Pellegrino please,” I say, staring at my menu, trying to avoid the embarrassment of being carded and then denied, or worse, my parents finding out I tried to order an alcoholic drink, at the club no less. “And what salad would you recommend?” I start to ask, but the words get caught in my throat when I finally look up and see the waiter.

Whoa.

He. Is. Gorgeous.

“Well…our house mixed salad is very popular. It’s locally grown organic and is fresh picked daily. It comes with a light raspberry vinaigrette dressing that can be tossed on or left on the side,” he says, holding my gaze.

“Oh. Yes. That sounds… yummy.” The words come out all breathy, and I’m immediately humiliated at the way I must have sounded.

Yummy. Breathy. Seriously, Ashley?

“Then on the side, miss?” the waiter asks, a faint smile playing on his lips.

“Yes, thank you,” I say, feeling my face flush with warmth.

Apparently Gregory Chase isn’t the only boy in town who can make a girl blush, and by the daggers Gregory’s shooting the poor guy with his eyes, he knows it too.

Gregory clears his throat and pulls the attention of the waiter back on him. “Fine. We’ll have one house salad with dressing on the side and an order of calamari to start.” Then with a dismissive flick of his hand, “Now, go fetch our drinks.”

Go fetch our drinks? Is he serious? How can he think it’s okay to speak to someone that way? But before I can say anything the cute waiter lets out an amused laugh that surprises me.

“I’m sorry sir, but I’m gonna have to see an ID first.” The waiter looks not at all sorry to ask, which makes me have to hide a smile.

“You have got to be kidding me,” Gregory starts. “I left it in the men’s locker room,” he explains, but his confidence is shaken. No one ever challenges Gregory.

“I’m sorry sir, but without a valid ID I’m not gonna be able to serve you, but I’ll be happy to wait here while you go and get it.” The waiter gives Greg a fake smile and then me a real one. He clearly is enjoying himself.

It’s evident Greg’s not going to get his way, so he finally concedes, but without an ounce of grace. “How about you take your eyes off my date, and go do your job.” He levels the waiter with his eyes. “And just bring me a damn coke while you’re at it.”

“Will do, sir,” the waiter says with artificial politeness, giving Gregory an almost imperceptible bow before turning around and leaving.

This time, I’m the one who gets caught watching one of the waitstaff walk away.

Lane

“Dude, I just busted some richie-rich for trying to order drinks underage, and he had the nerve to yell at me for looking at his date. Too bad for him, she was looking right back,” I say with a cocky laugh before giving Mario a high five. “Man, it’s the jerks like that, that always get everything in life—the money, the power, the girl. Probably has some big fat trust fund to pay for college too.”

“Sorry, man, but try not to let him get under your skin, amigo.”

I know Mario’s right, I should just let it go, but I’m sick and tired of Stays treating us locals like we’re nothing. And who the hell tells someone to ‘go fetch’? What am I? A dog? What an ass.

I drum my fingers against the metal counter at the pass until Mario rings the service bell with a grin and hands me their starters.

“Here, orders up and good luck.”

I give him a nod then try to shove my jealousy and anger down when I enter the dining room again, but I feel it hovering right on the surface. I take a deep breath before setting the calamari in the center of the table and the salad in front of the girl.

“Is there anything else I can get you right now?” I ask, and it’s hard to keep my eyes off of her long dark hair, her light green eyes and her legs that go on for miles. Maybe that douche had a point.

“No, I’m fine. Thank you,” she says politely, and I wonder why she’s on a date with such an ass-hat. Either way, girls like her don’t date boys like me. Unless they’re trying to piss off their parents, which is fine by me, but she doesn’t look like the rebellious type.

I turn to face him, lifting my eyebrows. “And you?” I ask because it’s my job.

“Yes, there is something you can do for me, how about you explain why my silverware is off of the floor.” He holds up his dinner fork, but I don’t understand what he’s talking about. Off the floor?

“Excuse me?” I reach for the fork to examine it. I personally set this table less than an hour ago, and the silverware hadn’t touched the ground. Why would it? But right before I’m able to take the fork from him for a closer look he opens his thumb and pointer finger letting the fork fall to the hardwood floor with a loud ping that echoes through the dining room.

“See.” He looks me right in the eyes, a smirk plastered across his smug face, challenging me.

You have got to be kidding me. This guy picked the wrong day.

I calmly pick the fork up off the ground, bring it to my mouth and spit on the tongs before lifting my apron and polishing it until it’s dry and shining. So much for not letting him get under my skin.

“My apologies, sir.” I place the fork back on the table in front of him like I’d accidentally brought out the wrong appetizer instead of spitting all over the dude’s silverware. “If there’s anything else I can do for you please let me know, otherwise your entrees will be out shortly.”

I watch his eyes go wide with shock before walking away looking cool, calm, and collected, even though on the inside I’m totally freaking out. This is not going to end well.
