Interview:

Hi! Welcome to Between Printed Pages, we’re so happy to have you here today.

Thank you so much for having me, Alicia! This is actually my first author interview, so I’m super excited that I can have it here at Between Printed Pages!

Before we start, would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself?

Sure! I’m a long-time reader, first-time author. I fell in love with reading at a very early age – say, around first grade or so. Unfortunately for me, writing novels isn’t my “day job.” I actually work in the legal field as part of a litigation support team. I’ve been asked why I write romance novels instead of crime or lawyer drama novels if I know the legal field so well. The answer is simple: to escape! Haha! Who wants to work all day, then come home and write for a few more hours about work? No, thank you!

Aside from being a reader and a writer, I’m a mother to two awesome kids and a wife to a very loving and supporting husband. They are really the reason why I feel so inspired to follow my dream of being an author and to never give up!

What was the inspiration for Finding Paradise and what about the story called to you?

My husband and I eloped on the island of Oahu in Hawaii over ten years ago. He had grown up on the island (his dad was in the Army and was stationed there for a few years) and we decided to have a wedding/honeymoon in one. The minute I stepped foot off the airplane, I fell in love with Hawaii! From the culture to the food to the scenery to the lifestyle, it was all so mesmerizing. Fast forward nine years, we went back to Oahu for a family vacation with our children and, as expected, I fell in love all over again. There is just something about Hawaii that is special and I wanted to share that with others so they can see and feel the same things about Hawaii that I do.

It’s interesting because a few months after we returned from our Oahu family vacation, I decided to write and publish my first novel. I wrote about six chapters worth of another story, but always had the Hawaiian islands in the back of my mind. They were haunting me in the most beautiful way. So I pushed that novel aside and mapped out a new idea that transformed into Finding Paradise. I wrote Finding Paradise in a way that the love story of Mila and Gage were almost secondary to Mila discovering Hawaii in the same awestruck way that I did so many years ago.

Do you have any advice for other aspiring writers?

JUST DO IT! No, I’m not plugging the Nike brand, though if they paid me to, I wouldn’t turn it down. My advice is to just do it! Go for it! I know it’s a scary concept – to open up your heart and your work to the world. And I will tell you right now: not everyone is going to love your novel. But that’s okay! You’re not writing for everyone else. Not for your significant other, not for your neighbor, not for your frenemies (though I get the innate urge to rub your accomplishments in their face). Write the novel because it’s your dream, not theirs.

Like Gage says in Finding Paradise, “You have to leap if you want to know how it feels to fly.” It’s so easy to find a million reasons why you can’t do it, but you will never know the amazing feeling of being a published author if you don’t try.

Finding Paradise is a self-published book, which is a whole new ballgame when it comes to writing novels. You are now not only the author, but you are also the publisher and the marketing team. I’ve started a blog on my website, www.vportiz.com/confessions, called Confessions of a New Author. This blog is a series of my adventures in writing that I hope can calm some fears and maybe even inspire some aspiring writers to take the next step and publish their novels. I’m hoping to put up some new content on the blog after my next novel is published this spring.

Within Finding Paradise, which character was your favourite to write and why?

Honestly, I would’ve thought it would be Mila because we share so many of the same personality traits. But it turns out that I loved writing Aunt Sophie and Baylee! Probably because I based those two characters on two people that I know personally. Aunt Sophie is based on my best friend’s mom, who is witty and sharp while having the gentlest heart I’ve ever known. And Baylee, oh Baylee, she is based on one of my work besties. A crazy, fun soul who is just as vulnerable as anyone, even though she tries to hide it. It’s so funny because the inspiration for Baylee was one of my beta readers and after she read Finding Paradise, she said she LOVED Baylee. I told her, “Well, of course, you did. You two are the same person!” Both Aunt Sophie and Baylee were such fun characters to write. I loved their dynamic together and separately with Mila. They were a big part of Mila’s journey.

And yes, readers, Baylee will have her own story coming soon! That will be a fun book to write!

What are three songs that describe Finding Paradise?

I have a Spotify playlist specifically for Finding Paradise at https://open.spotify.com/user/vportiz_books/playlist/3loOrvQKy3c6XXStWk4zVj. I listened to this playlist pretty much non-stop while I was writing Finding Paradise. Most of the songs are sung either by native Hawaiians or are sung in the Hawaiian language. Such beautiful melodies that take you to the islands and make you never want to leave!

I love all the songs on the playlist, but if I had to pick three, they would be:

  • Simple Love Song by Anuhea: This song is what I consider to be the anthem for Finding Paradise. The words accurately describe everything that Mila felt for Gage and I love Anuhea
  • Falling by Keahiwai: These Hawaiian singers capture what it feels like to fall in love in paradise in this song.
  • Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole: This song is so important to me. Not only does it appear in a great scene in Finding Paradise, but it is also the wedding song that my husband and I chose. It’s a gorgeous rendition by a Hawaiian legend.

I heard that you have some ideas for your next book! Can you tell us anything about them?

YES! YES! YES! I am so excited to exclusively announce my next book on your blog!

Damaged Property is slated to be released this spring, though the exact date is currently tentative. It’s the story of a broken woman, Talia, and her chance meeting with a ridiculously hot Albuquerque Police Officer, Dante, who has demons of his own. Even though they fight it, fate throws them together and they learn to work together to fight their pasts before it catches up with them.

Where Finding Paradise was bright, fun, and sweet, in contrast, Damaged Property is much darker and sensual. The heat between Talia and Dante is unimaginable and you’ll find yourself caught up in their sexual tension, biting your nails and waiting for them to give into each other. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions with an ending that you’ll need to read to believe!

What are three books you believe everyone should take a chance on?

I read across all genres of novels, so my answer to this may seem a bit odd. But there’s something for everyone.

Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover: This book BLEW ME AWAY! I wasn’t so sure about it when I first cracked it open, but I was stuck on a six-hour flight home and that was the only book on my Kindle. By the time my final plane landed in my hometown, I was literally in tears. So perfectly written by my favorite author. My goal in life is to bring Colleen Hoover to tears with one of my books as she did to me with her book.

The Project Eden series by Brett Battles: The first novel in this series, Sick, captured my attention and refused to let it go until the conclusion of the series six books later (seven books total). I’ll admit, I’m a secret lover of doomsday and apocalyptic novels, but many books I’ve read fell short of what I was looking for. Project Eden was what I was looking for!

The Pact by Jodi Picoult: Oh my gosh, this book was incredible. It was the second book I ever read by Jodi Picoult and it was the one that turned me into a lifetime fan. I love that Jodi Picoult can make you question your own morals that you thought were set in stone before opening the book. What you thought, in the beginning, is never what you think about in the end.

Aside from reading and writing, what do you do in your spare time? Any unusual hobbies?

Most days, I share the same hobbies as my three fat cats: sleep, eat, and complain. But, when I can actually talk myself into it, I love to go running outside when the Colorado weather allows for it. I’ve run two half-marathons, a few 10K’s, and an obstacle course race.

But if we’re being honest here, I love to dance and lip sync. I’m not talking about professionally. I’m talking about acting out my own music video when no one is around. Sometimes in the mirror. Sometimes in the kitchen (best place to spin in my socks). Sometimes in my office at work when the door is closed and no one is watching. It’s weird, I know. But it’s fun. In my head, I’m a superstar!

Last, but not least, what is your favourite word?

Peculiar. I like the way it rolls off your tongue, especially if you have some sort of accent. Everyone says it just a little bit differently and I love that. Plus, I tend to describe myself as peculiar and whenever I do, no one ever disagrees with me. Sort of peculiar, isn’t it?

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer our questions! Congratulations on your debut release! We’re extremely excited for Finding Paradise, and we’re looking forward to reading Damaged Goods!

Review: The Truth She Knew

30367813

Title: The Truth She Knew [Book #1]
Author: J.A. Owenby
Publication Date: Sept 12, 2016
Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance
GoodReads

Synopsis:

Mama didn’t want me. In fact, she would’ve traded my soul back for someone different if God would’ve let her, but he didn’t, so she was stuck with me.
For eighteen-year-old Lacey, life at home is a rollercoaster. She doesn’t think she’ll ever be good enough to truly deserve Mama’s love.

But when Lacey enters college and meets Walker, everything starts to change. Suddenly, Lacey is face to face with the realization that maybe what she’s always seen as normal really isn’t. Her entire life—and everything she’s ever believed about herself and her family—is abruptly hanging in midair.

Lacey is left facing two paths, and she has to make a choice. The first means walking away from everything she’s ever known. The other means never really knowing the truth.

I finished this book and wanted to scream like WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ENDING!?!? I can’t even. WHY.

Lacey believes that she is possessed by demons because that’s what her mother says. And she also believes that her mother has a special relationship with God. Lacey believes that God tells her mother what she does when she’s not home, because her mother somehow knows everything.

Enter Walker, normal guy, normal life, relatively normal family. When he meets Lacey, he begins to show her that maybe her family isn’t “normal.”

As a whole, this book was both insanely what-on-earth and yet amazing. Lacey’s belief in her mother’s “relationship” with God is astounding – and it’s sad to think that there are people who live like that. If their family is all they know, they will never be able to tell what’s “normal” and what’s absolutely, totally, insanely wrong. Lacey doesn’t realize that her family is crazy simply because it’s been something that she grew up with, lived with, and has been reinforced through her sister and her mother’s “friend.” There are so many things wrong with Lacey’s perception of the world, and I think this book does a great job of showing how skewed it can be and how much of an impact family can have.

Note: I’m not saying her family is crazy ’cause they’re religious (I mean, I’m Christian, and I’m like 90% sure I’m not crazy…), they’re crazy and dysfunctional for very different reasons…

Lacey grew A LOT throughout this book, and her character grew to be better, stronger, more resilient. Then there’s Walker… Oh man. There’s so much about the second half of the book that I want to just toss out there, but it’ll spoil the book. BUT I WAS SO ANGRY. LIKE… F U R I O U S.

In part, I get why it happened, kind of. But it really flipped some of my initial judgements on their head. I actually got so mad at the end, and then the book was suddenly done. AND I WAS SCREAMING. Ask my roommate.

I mean, it’s one thing to have that happen and for the book to progress, but everything just hits the fan, and the book ends only like 20 pages later.

LIKE WHAT?

YOU CAN’T DO THAT — JHLAKJHFLKAJSDHKAJDH

Anyways, so the book ends – I fly to GoodReads, and I’m both frustrated and relieved to find that this is actually the first book in a series.

Now I’m waiting for the next book to release and am hoping that we see a lot more of Lacey as she tries to navigate the world with her new perspectives (and a few dashed hopes).

Excerpt:

I stretch my legs out into the sand and lean back on my hands, soaking up the warmth of the sun like the sea turtles down the beach. “Thank you for bringing me here. This has been absolutely amazing.”

Gage covers my hand with his again. “Anything for you, Mila.” His deep voice is raspy and instantly heats up my skin more than the sun ever could.

Anything for you, Mila.

I toss his words around in my head, dissecting them and savoring them. My walls are crumbling, falling, falling, falling. This is what I want. This is what I’ve wanted since that first day on the plane. I wanted Gage. I wanted his hazel eyes to bear into my soul. I wanted his dimple to sink in every time he saw me. I wanted his full lips to touch mine. Even when I didn’t think I did, I wanted it. I wanted it all. I want Gage.

I want him to be mine.

“Mila.” Gage trails his other hand along my jaw, slowly, delicately, like he did earlier. “I’m sorry. I’m trying, but it’s really hard to hold myself back from you. I’ve never met anyone like you before. And I know that’s not what you want to hear right now. But I can’t leave here today without you knowing how I feel about you.”

He’s wrong. It’s exactly what I want to hear right now.

He leans closer to me and my breath quickens. I can’t turn away. I can’t stop this. And I won’t. I need this. Gage needs this. I need Gage. Gage needs me. He draws me in and I let him. Closer. Closer. It’s everything I’ve wanted for so long. He’s holding my heart hostage and I never want him to release it. His breath is on my lips and I close my eyes, holding back my regrets, letting him in–

Excerpt:

She was taken aback. “I … I’m not looking for anyone. The only reason I’m here tonight was to get away from someone.”

“Right, and here you are … you found me instead. You can’t deny it’s not serendipity.”

“Serendipity?” Olivia repeated.

“Look, I believe you walked into this bar tonight, not by chance, and I was meant to talk to you. When you’re not looking for something and find something extraordinary, that’s serendipity.” He motioned with his hand in the air like it was some magic trick.

She observed in silence, wondering if this sort of crap worked with other women.

“You think you’re something extraordinary?”

“No, not me … us,” he replied.

Olivia laughed. “Do girls fall for this kind of stuff?”

“I wouldn’t know,” he replied honestly and let out a long breath. “Alright look, we got off on the wrong foot. Can we call it a truce?”

Olivia bit her lip. She hated to admit it, but she was kind of having fun, well maybe just a little. He did manage to get her to forget her problems at least for the moment.

“Nick Montgomery.” He encouraged her by holding out his hand.

She hesitated before taking it. “Olivia … Montiano.”

“Olivia Montiano? Is that your real name?”

“Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” Her brows tangled together.

“You’re not one of those girls who like to toy with men. Give them a fake name and number?”

“Do I look like the kind of girl who would do such a thing?”

He amusingly narrowed his eyes at her.

“Okay.” She laughed. “Yes, Olivia is my name. I was named after Olivia Hussey.”

“No way!”

She caught sarcasm and narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you familiar with Olivia Hussey?”

“Yeah, sure. Everyone knows who Olivia Hussey is … okay, not really.”

“She’s an actress, obviously one of my mother’s favorites.”

He shrugged. “Anyhow, it’s a lovely name.”

He tapped his fingers on the counter. “Montiano … where have I heard that name before? Sounds very familiar to me.”

She shrugged innocently. Her surname name had been all over the news for the past year.

“Hey, you know what I realized? We share the same first four letters in our surname. You have to admit it’s more than a coincidence.” he said.

“Wow! A good observation.” She smirked, not seeing what the big deal was.

He studied her for a moment, raising his hands in the air in defeat.

“Alright, Olivia Montiano, I give up. I see you’re a woman of many well-kept secrets, and you have the right to them.”

After a short moment of silence, she said, “So, what’s your story?” She was trying to be a little more friendly-ish.

“Nope, I’m not going to tell you a single thing.”

“Alright, I guess I deserve that,” Olivia replied.

“Okay, you don’t have to twist my arm. I’ll tell you … but over dinner.”

“You don’t give up? No, that won’t be possible.”

“Are you afraid that you will find me interesting? See, I’m the type of guy who stays on your mind, long after you met me.” His eyes danced.

Oh great, he was one of those. Full of himself. She should introduce him to Dario.

“For sure. You’re not a guy who is … forgettable.” Olivia laughed.

“Are you making fun of me?”

“You’re a very strange man, Montgomery.”

He took out a blue pen from under the counter. “Give me your hand,” he asked and extended his hand to her. She hesitated for a moment, allowing him to take her hand in his.

“You’re not going to write your phone number, are you?”

“Only a fake one.” He smiled.

GoodReads

Synopsis:

She struggles to feel human.

In 2256, the only remnants of civilization on Earth’s first colonized planet, Kepler, are the plant-covered buildings and the nocturnal, genetically spliced bug-people nesting within them: the Cull. During the day, Syl leaves her home in the sewers beneath Elite City to scavenge for food, but at night the Cull come looking for a meal of their own. Syl thought gene splicing died with the Android War a century ago. She thought the bugs could be exterminated, Elite city rebuilt, and the population replenished. She’s wrong.

Whoever engineered the Cull isn’t done playing God. Syl is abducted and tortured in horrific experiments which result in her own DNA being spliced, slowly turning her into one of the bugs. Now she must find a cure and stop the person responsible before every remaining man, woman, and child on Kepler is transformed into the abomination they fear.

He struggles not to.

For Bastion, being an android in the sex industry isn’t so bad. Clubbing beneath the streets of New Elite by day and seducing the rich by night isn’t an altogether undesirable occupation. But every day a new android cadaver appears in the slum gutters, and each caved in metal skull and heap of mangled wires whittles away at him.

Glitches—androids with empathy—are being murdered, their models discontinued and strung up as a warning. Show emotion, you die. Good thing Bastion can keep a secret, or he would be the next body lining the street.

He can almost live with hiding his emotions. That is, until a girl shows up in the slums—a human girl, who claims she was an experiment. And in New Elite, being a human is even worse than being a Glitch. Now Bastion must help the girl escape before he becomes victim to his too-human emotions, one way or another.

Guest Post:

Welcome author Jadah McCoy (JM), as well as Syl and Bastion from Artificial! Today, Syl and Bastion will be giving us a peak into their lives before Artificial. Enjoy!

JM: Hey guys! Tell the audience a bit about yourselves!

Syl: Well, I grew up on Kepler in the sewers beneath Elite. Scrounging for food, barely surviving, you know the drill. My life revolves around avoiding those fu—

Bastion: *he covers Syl’s mouth with his palm* Careful, darling. A family blog is no place for your potty mouth.

Syl: *she rolls her eyes, swatting him away* Like I was saying, the Cull come out at night, and we do our best to avoid them. I don’t plan on being eaten anytime soon.

Bastion: *waggles his eyebrows very inappropriately*

JM: And you, Bastion?

Bastion: Me? Oh, I’m boring, really. *he makes a dismissive hand gesture* I live in a metropolis and occasionally pester an old mechanic into partaking in my mischief.

JM: So your homes are obviously very different, then.

Syl: *glances at Bastion* They couldn’t be more different. His is full of bright lights and life, mine is comprised of empty buildings and death. His flourishes, mine is slowly dying.

JM: But both are obviously very dangerous, albeit in different ways.

Bastion: Yes, well, while Syl here turns giant bugs into puddles of guts for a living, New Elite’s monsters are not quite so forthcoming.

JM: I see. And what was life like before you two met?

*they both look away, thoughtful*

Syl: Well, it wasn’t great.

JM: How so?

Syl: A lot of people died…some of them because of me. We were running out of food, out of space…running out of time.

JM: That sounds not so great. Bastion?

Bastion: It was…long and boring. Before Syl, my life was like a moonless night, and then she shot across my sky like a meteor.

Syl: *she rolls her eyes* This is him avoiding the question.

JM: …Did you really just quote Twilight?

Bastion: What? It’s a classic!

JM: Now I think you’re trying to get me off track.

Bastion: I would never. In fact, I resent that.

JM: Back on track! There’s a lot to hate about Elite and New Elite, that much is clear. But what’s one thing you love about where you live?

Bastion: Easy. That there’s still good in my fellow androids, despite all the war, the genocide, the horrors. There are still those out there willing to sacrifice themselves to help other androids, to help Glitches, and even humans.

JM: Syl?

Syl: I guess the mystery…the beauty. There’s so much knowledge out there…about my people, where they came from, all the strange things about them I don’t understand yet. It’s strange to walk into a room, untouched by anything but dust. The person’s shirt still laying across their bed where they took it off last. All their belongings still there. It’s haunting.

JM: I can see that. You must feel like an intruder everywhere you go.

Syl: Sometimes, yeah.

JM: So, I took the liberty of gathering a few questions from your adoring fans!

Bastion: Oh, joy! Let me sum it up for you, love. I don’t dream of electric sheep, I’m not going to tell you a joke, and my joy stick only vibrates if you pay ex—

Syl: *she covers his mouth with her hand, this time* Family blog, remember?

JM: Okay! First question is from Holly. What does Syl find most attractive about Bastion?

Bastion: Oi! These questions aren’t so bad!

Syl: Seriously? What do I find most attractive about Bastion? Hm… Probably the stupid face he makes when he gets his ass kicked and I have to save him.

Bastion: That’s cold, love.

JM: Next question is from Dylan. Bastion, as a Glitch, can you recognize other Glitches?

Bastion: Not really. I don’t have a “Glitch radar,” so to speak. But there are certain places Glitches are more apt to frequent.

JM: Last one. From Teresa, why does android society seemingly follow so many human social conventions?

Bastion: *laughs* I’ll say this: humanity is a hard habit to break once it’s learned. And the vastly superior genetically enhanced apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, my friends.

JM: Very interesting. Well, that’s all I’ve got for you. Thanks for answering questions!

Bastion: No problem. Thanks for creating us!

Syl: *laughs* See ya, boss.

About the Author:Jadah

Jadah currently lives in Nashville, TN and works in law. When not babysitting attorneys, she can be found juicing her brain for creative ideas or fantasizing about her next trip out of the country (or about Tom Hiddleston as Loki – it’s always a toss up when she fantasizes).

She grew up in rural Arkansas, yet can still write good and sometimes even wears shoes! She did date her first cousin for a while but they decided against marriage for the sake of the gene pool.

Her true loves are elephants, cursing, and sangria – in that order. If you find an elephant that curses like a sailor whilst drinking sangria, you’re dangerously close to becoming her next romantic victim – er, partner.

She cut her writing teeth on badly written, hormone-driven fanfiction (be glad that’s out of her system), and her one true dream is to have wildly erotic fanfiction with dubious grammar written about her own novels. Please make her dreams come true.

Review:

This book will break you.

There, that’s it. Right there. Done.

Okay, not really, but honestly this book went way beyond any of my expectations.

This is a tale of life and learning to take chances, even when all the odds are stacked against you. This book is about perseverance in the face of adversity. This book is about understanding that life isn’t always fair, but it should never prevent you from doing what you aspire to do.

Callum was doing just fine in school until Everly came around. An enigma to everyone, the only one she was civil with was Callum. Through their chats they learned that neither is what they seem – Everly wants to experience the world, but is afraid of what could happen, while Callum wants to help people, but he’s having trouble accepting that he isn’t a superhero. The story was gripping and beautiful and I want to tell you everything that happened, but if you don’t actually read the book, you’ll miss the beauty of it.

The story was raw and real – but not necessarily realistic. Maybe it’s the fact that Everly had to grow too fast, or that Callum is a smart genius child, but they both seemed eon’s ahead of their time. The dialogue was real and raw, but often more poetic and “confessional” than I’ve ever heard, even from adults. Sometimes it was great, other times it kind of detracted from the novel and made you sit back like, “Wait… they’re only like 20, right?” That being said, this type of dialogue left room for a lot of life lessons that really hit home for me, and it really added to the overall feel of the novel.

One thing that really impacted me was Callum’s obsession with the word “just” and its effect on how a statement comes across. It’s amazing how, when you think about it, one word can change how you respond to a statement. “It was just a million dollars” versus “It was a million dollars” – it’s a big difference in how someone comes across, and my use of the word will be something that I’ll keep in mind in my own life.

All in all, this book was a beautifully written novel. The characters were well crafted with unique and surprising personalities. With a captivating story line, from Callum’s POV, through which we follow him through school, his practicum, and his career, and watching him and Everly navigate every obstacle that comes their way, this story will hit you straight through the heart.

I know I’m making this sound cheesy, but honestly this is a breathtaking novel. Definitely would recommend.

Excerpt:

“I’m sorry about your hand,” I said. He threw his jacket over one of the couches and sat on the other. His eyes dropped to my arm, which I was subconsciously rubbing.

“Did he hurt you?” He wasn’t mad, this time—he was worried.

I tried to hide my smile and shook my head. “Not really. I bruise easily.”

He jumped to get closer. “Bruise?” He pulled my wrist and turned my arm to check the damage. It was red. Maybe I wouldn’t get a bruise, but his face made me smile.

“I’m not dying, Keith. He was just an ass.”

“I told you to go with your brother.” He sat again. “Did you have fun, at least?”

“Not really. I guess I didn’t drink enough.” I shrugged, not feeling drunk anymore.

“You really shouldn’t have told me that.” He jumped from the couch and disappeared into the kitchen. I heard a couple of cabinet doors opening and closing and then glasses clinking.

Keith came back with a bottle under his arm, two glasses in one hand, and a lime cut in two and salt in the other.

I wasn’t experienced, but I knew what that meant. “Tequila? Do you think it’s wise?”

“This night wasn’t supposed to be about being wise. It’s just the two of us: you won’t get in trouble.” He paused for a second, staring at the walls in deep thought. He then placed the ingredients on the coffee table. “We won’t get too drunk. Do you know how to drink this?”

I nodded. I’d never tasted it, but I saw it in the movies. The first one burned, and the second did, too. I stopped, while Keith kept pouring shots for himself.

After the first shot, Keith had turned the TV to a music channel. He had turned it up a couple of times, since. We were laughing at each other’s faces. Of course, he was used to it, but I saw the glimmer in his eyes. We were both drunk. The first time I had ever gotten drunk was with Keith Hale. Who would have guessed?

“You should go to sleep,” he slurred, pushing me to the stairs. “Your brother would kill me if he showed up right now.”

“Really?” I stumbled on almost every step. Keith grabbed my waist every time and released me after I steadied myself, only to stumble again. I repeated the word because it was funny in my tongue. “Really?” He laughed behind me.

“Yeah…” He was also dragging his words. “Thanks.”

“For what?” I had reached my door and turned to say good night.

He struggled for the words. His smile disappeared and he took so long to say anything that I was considering forgetting the question and going to my room. Then he grabbed my face with his hands.

Regina: Hell yes, how do you think I got my patch?
