I am excited to introduce all of you to Molly Cochran! If you haven’t yet read any of her books, you definitely should. Author of The Forever King and Legacy series, Molly Cochran is here today to talk about her new novella, Wishes.

Hi, Molly! Welcome to Between Printed Pages, we’re so happy to have you here today~

So glad to be here!

Before we start, could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Okay, let’s see… I was born in Japan. I’ve lived in Paris. My major in  college was Fiction Writing. I went to baking school after college (which gives you some idea of how much a degree in Fiction Writing is worth). I worked in publishing in New York for a time. I’m a perfume slut.

What was the inspiration for the Legacy series as a whole? Why did you decide to write a novella for the series?

My inspiration was Wal-Mart. I read that Wal-Mart banned its employees from wearing pentagrams (the five-pointed star that is the symbol of Wicca), and that made me wonder what would happen if a Wal-Mart were built in a town populated by witches.

How is the publishing process for the novella similar to or different from the publication of the main novels of the series?

It’s exactly the same. With a traditional publisher like Simon & Schuster, everything takes a really long time. An e-novella like WISHES takes less time than a printed hardcover novel, but it’s still months of editing, copyediting, proofreading, getting a cover, etc.

How did you get to be a published writer? Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who hope to, one day, get their work published?

I began as a ghostwriter on a men’s action/adventure series. I think this was excellent training because I learned to write action, which is difficult, by having to do it all the time. Plus, as a ghostwriter, you can make mistakes without having your reputation ruined. In the beginning of your career, celebrity isn’t always the best thing.

Apart from reading and writing, what do you do in your free time? Any unusual hobbies?

I cook. I do yoga. I have a dog, which is like having a child. And I wish writing novels was just about reading and writing. There’s so much publicity stuff we all have to do, especially with YA literature—signings, interviews, talks—whatever it takes to get readers to notice you and your work.

What’s your favourite part of the writing process?

Revision. Once the first draft is done, the work becomes fun. The revisions are what transforms your novel from a shaggy plot into a real book.

For all the readers out there, do you have any books you think everyone should take a chance on?

Yes. WISHES. Read WISHES. If you don’t love it, I’ll give you back your two bucks.

Last, but not least, what’s your favourite word?

I was going to say “vestibule”, but I’ll be serious here. My favorite word is YES. “No” is a good teacher—it shows you boundaries, points out your mistakes, tells you where danger lurks… but YES feels so good. When an agent takes you on… YES! When an editor buys your manuscript…YES! When you make the Times Bestseller List… YES, OH YES!

Thank you so much, Molly Cochran, for taking the time to answer our questions! We’re super excited to read the novella!

I am, too! Let me know how you like it!
