Interview: Michelle Madow on The Secret Diamond Sisters

Recently, I had the opportunity to ask Michelle Madow, author of the Transcend Time Series, a few questions about her new series, The Secret Diamond Sisters. If you haven’t seen/heard about it yet, here’s a little bit about the upcoming series:

Final Front CoverTitle: The Secret Diamond Sisters [#1]

Savannah. Courtney. Peyton.

The three sisters grew up not knowing their father and not quite catching a break. But it looks like their luck is about to change when they find out the secret identity of their long-lost dad—a billionaire Las Vegas hotel owner who wants them to come live in a gorgeous penthouse hotel suite. Suddenly the Strip’s most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in. But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past.

Now, to the questions ~!

What inspired you to write The Secret Diamond Sisters?

I visit Las Vegas every year because of a family event, and I was walking through my favorite hotel — The Wynn — when I thought, “What would it be like to live here?” From there, the idea for The Secret Diamond Sisters formed! I love how the city bursts with magic and excitement. Vegas does everything as big as possible, so being there is like entering a fantasyland. My favorite part is definitely all the different hotels. Each one is a different theme, and they all have such distinct personalities. A few of my favorite hotels are mentioned in The Secret Diamond Sisters (Paris, the Venetian, and many implications to the Wynn), so hopefully readers are transported into these magical hotels while they’re reading the book!

How was the publishing process of this book difference than your last series?

I self-published the Transcend Time Saga, so I was in charge of literally everything about the process. It was very much a learning process for me. With The Secret Diamond Sisters, I’ve had the help of my amazing editor, Natashya Wilson, who has pushed me to bring the story and characters to levels I never could have on my own. I have a professional cover design team who created beautiful, pop-out covers. (I designed my own covers for Transcend Time.) I have a marketing team behind me, and a publicist, to help decide what best to do to spread word about the series, and to get it into bookstores and reviewed by professional publications. Working with a large publisher has been a dream come true, and I can’t wait to see what happens when the book comes out!

Another huge difference between the experience of self-publishing and traditional publishing is timing. With Transcend Time, I made the first book, Remembrance, available for purchase immediately after it was ready. Then I wrote and edited Vengeance, and made that available, and then I wrote and edited Timeless, and made that available. I’ve been amazed by how far in advance everything is done in traditional publishing. For example, by the time the first book in The Secret Diamond Sisters trilogy comes out (Feb 25), I’ll be more than halfway done drafting Book 3!

As an aspiring writer, I often find myself with too many ideas and get sidetracked by them when I’m in the middle of a WIP. How do you stay on track with your WIPs when new ideas come knocking at your door?

I naturally love finishing projects I start, so I’m very focused on completing a book before starting another one. To stop myself from getting sidetracked, I have an “idea folder” in my computer. I’ll jot down notes for new ideas so I don’t forget about them, and save them there for later use. Then I’ll return to the project I’m working on. If I don’t finish a project, I won’t have a completed novel, and just knowing that keeps me on track!

What is your favourite word?

“Amazing.” I use it WAY more than I should!

Thank you, Michelle, for your time !~
