Review: Sleepaway Girls

Title: Sleepaway Girls
Author: Jen Calonita

When Sam’s best friend gets her first boyfriend, she’s not ready to spend the summer listening to the two of them call each other “pookie”. Sick of being a third wheel, Sam applies to be a counselor-in-training at Whispering Pines camp in the New York Catskills. But what she doesn’t realize is that it’s not going to be all Kumbaya sing-alongs and gooey s’mores. If Ashley, the alpha queen of Whispering Pines, doesn’t ruin Sam’s summer, then her raging crush on the surfer-blond and flirtatious Hunter just might. At least she has playful Cole, who’s always teasing her, but is oh-so-comfortable to hang out with, and the singular gang of girls that become fast friends with Sam-they call themselves the Sleepaway Girls.

This book is a great summer read. Anyone out there heard of the series ‘Camp Confidential’ by Melissa J Morgan? Well this is basically that, except summed up in one book. Though ‘Sleepaway Girls’ only covers one summer, it is written just as well, and gives every detail that a reader could hope for. This book is about making new friends in uncharted territories, overcoming the crazy Queen Bee, and falling in love, where love is most unexpected.

I enjoyed this book, as I do many, and hope to read more by Jen Calonita soon~

“We need a name that only we would understand.”
“Boy crazy?” Court suggested. Grace made a face.
“I’ve got one,” Em said. “What about the sleepaway girls? That’s what we are, aren’t we?”
Sleepaway girls. I kind of liked that. “Works for me,” I said.
Court grinned. “Well, sleepaway girls, I have a feeling this is the start of something amazing.”

“I don’t want to hear the noise,” a little boy named Lucas cried. “I want to sit on the hill.”
“Lucas, you’ll be fine,” Hunter insisted as Lucas sniffled. “No one else wants to go sit on the hill. You don’t want us to all go to the hill, do you?”
Lucas just cried more and Cole went over and put his arm around him. “I want Hunter to sit with me on the hill,” he sobbed. I looked at Hunter. He rolled his eyes again.
